A motorist was
killed Tuesday night in a single-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 12 near
Tremont Road, the Chesterton Fire Department was reporting.
Coroner Cyndi Dykes had not released the victim’s name by deadline today,
but the Porter County Sheriff’s Police identified her as a 30-year-old woman
whose vehicle was registered in Michigan City.
According to the
CFD, the crash occurred shortly before 9 p.m. Deputy Fire Chief Nate
Williams told the Chesterton Tribune that the woman was eastbound on
U.S. 12 when she struck a guardrail on the south side of the road.
On their arrival,
firefighters observed a heavily damaged but upright full-size pickup truck
which appeared to have rolled down the side of the guardrail. One
firefighter made entry into the pickup through the passenger’s side door to
control the woman’s cervical spine while other firefighters removed the
driver’s side door to allow for extrication, but on assessing the patient
medics from Northwest Health determined her to be deceased.
requested a helicopter,” the CFD said. “And we had requested Porter Fire to
assist in the landing zone setup. Both units were canceled. The truck was
secured and fire units cleared the scene” at 9:39 p.m.
The CFD returned to
the scene around 11:30 p.m. to assist the Coroner’s Office in removing the
woman from the vehicle.
