Charles Merritt
Roth, Sr., age 90 of Chesterton, IN, passed away comfortably and peacefully
at home on Saturday, November 10, 2018.
He was born on
February 25, 1928, in Catasauqua, PA, to Lewis and Grace (Stauffer) Roth.
Charles (Chuck Sr.)
is survived by his daughters, Karyn (Mike) Hartney of Golden, CO, and
Cynthia Roth of Chicago, IL; son Charles “Chuck” (Annette) Roth Jr., of
Chesterton, IN; grandchildren, Alex Hartney of Golden, CO, Andrew and Hannah
Roth of Chesterton, IN.
He was preceded in
death by his wife of 60 years Barbara (Chickie) Roth; parents; brothers,
Lewis and John Roth; and sister, Elsie Hotchkiss.
Chuck Sr. was
raised in Pennsylvania and loved nature, hunting, fishing, gardening, and
being outdoors. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed on the island
of Guam. After his military service he returned to Pennsylvania and worked
for the local newspaper. Chuck Sr. moved to Chicago, IL, to attend school
where he met his wife Barbara (Chickie) Roth. In 1959, looking for a small
community to raise their family, they moved to Chesterton, IN, with their
three young children. He worked in the field of lithography and commuted to
Chicago, then eventually Elmhurst, IL, for thirty years until retiring in
1988.
In 1980, he and his
son Chuck Jr., purchased the Chesterton Feed and Garden Center. There he
made acquaintances and friendships that he cherished for life. He actively
worked until his recent illness in 2016.
Chuck Sr. was best
known for his friendly manner and his kind and fair nature. He had a keen
sense of humor and loved using it any chance he could. He enjoyed the small
community of Chesterton, which he made his home.
Memorial services
will be held on Friday, November 16, 2018, at 7:00 p.m., at Edmonds & Evans
Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN 46304, with Chaplain Craig
Forwalter officiating.
Memorial visitation
will take place on Friday, November 16, 2018, from 4:00 p.m. until the time
of service.
The family will
have a private graveside burial at Ridgewood Memorial Park Cemetery, in Des
Plaines, IL.
