Services Saturday, June 18 for Cadet Mitchell Alexander Winey

Mitchell Alexander Winey, age 21 of Chesterton, IN, passed away on June 2nd, 2016, in Fort Hood, Texas, during a military training accident. He was born on May 5, 1995, in Valparaiso, IN, to Tim and Margo (Groff) Winey.

Mitchell is survived by his parents, Tim and Margo Winey of Chesterton, IN; sister, Paige (Jason) Winey-Scheuer of Westminster, CO; paternal grandmother, Shirley Winey; maternal grandfather, Ronald Groff; aunt, Jo (Greg) Winey-Babcock; uncle, Jon (Lauralee) Winey; cousins, Paul Babcock (Nolita), Erik (Lauren) Babcock and Mark Babcock; and many other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, C. Wm. Winey and grandmother, Rochelle Groff.

Mitchell graduated from Chesterton High School in 2014. He served as class president for four years and was a member of the National Honor Society. He captained the CHS Soccer Team. In 2014 he was also elected Prom King. He reported to the United States Military Academy at West Point July 2, 2014, was accepted into the Corps of Cadets as a Plebe in the Class of 2018, and was recognized on the Dean’s list in all four semesters majoring in Engineering Management. He served as ACIC for the West Point Ski Patrol, as well as, CIC and founding member of the newly formed freestyle ski team. He was a member of Company B1 and will forever be a Barbarian. At Fort Hood, Texas he participated in Cadet Troop Leader Training, embedded with the 3rd Battalion, 16th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. He earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. He is remembered for his permanent smile, his warm, welcoming nature and for the way he brought cheer to all those around him. Also, please remember the eight other soldiers who lost their lives in this accident and their families.

Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2016, at 2:00 p.m., with a gathering prior to services beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Chesterton High School, 2125 S. 11th St., Chesterton, IN, with Pastor Cathy Allison officiating. Reception will follow at the high school. Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements, 219-926-1330.
