Ervin John
Hawrylewicz, 89 years old, of Beverly Shores, IN, formerly of Olympia
Fields, IL, passed away peacefully at 1:45 a.m. Sunday, October 2, 2016 at
Hospice Franciscan Communities in Michigan City, IN.
Ervin was born on
March 26, 1927, in Chicago, IL, to Joseph and Harriet (Lapsys) Hawrylewicz,
who preceded him in death.
Also preceding
Ervin in death were his brother, Henry Hawry and his sister, Lorraine
Kampwirth. Erv is survived by his wife, Marilyn Hargrave Hawrylewicz.
Together they celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in June of this
year.
Also surviving are
his four children, Claudia Hawrylewicz of New Lenox, IL, Christopher
(Roxanne) Hawrylewicz of Naperville, IL, Peter (Ken Lieber) Hawrylewicz of
Miami, FL, and Cynthia Hawrylewicz Matchinis of Williamsburg, VA; ten
grandchildren, Alicia (John) Schmitt, Todd (Crystal) Balousek, Jessica
(Finn) Ford, Benjamin Balousek, Zachary Balousek, Carrie (James) Fults,
Mandy (Anthony) Perez, Ashley (Martin) Eichmann, Allison Matchinis, and
Kellie Matchinis; sixteen great-grandchildren, Alex, Jacob, Maddyn,
Annabelle, Ellison, Ethan, Parker, Macy, Brody, Nora, Molly, Tessa, Jackson,
Harlan, Lila and Payton.
Ervin honorably
served the United States of America in World War II as a correspondent of
the First US Infantry Division covering, among other assignments, the
Nuremberg Trials. Ervin attended the University of Illinois, University of
Chicago and graduated with a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Illinois Institute
of Technology. He served as Director of Research at Mercy Hospital in
Chicago with an emphasis on breast cancer research. Erv was the first Ph.D.
to serve as president of the American Cancer Society in Illinois. In
retirement Erv enjoyed volunteering for the Indiana State Park and National
Lakeshore.
A memorial service
celebrating his life will be held at 4:00 p.m., Friday, October 14, 2016, at
Lakeview Funeral Home & Crematory, 247 W. Johnson Road, LaPorte, IN, (219)
362-3100, with Ange Benz and Terese Fabbri officiating.
Visitation will be
held from 2:00 p.m. until time of service on Friday at the funeral home.
