Robert Henry
Barthel, Sr., age 87, of Portage, Ind., passed away on March 10, 2014.
He was born on
November 25, 1926, in Gary, Ind., to Henry and Francis (Kloer) Barthel, both
of whom preceded him in death.
He is survived by
his wife of 22 years, Judith Barthel; sons Robert H. (Dina) Barthel Jr. and
their children, Angeline, Cathleen, and Dylan of Portage, as well as Jaimee
R. Barthel of Sturgis, Mich., and Staff Sergeant Robert J. Barthel of Fort
Sam Huston in San Antonio, Texas, and daughter Kathryn Covert, and her son
Bo Covert, of Chesterton, Ind., as well as six great-grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews.
He was also
preceded in death by his first wife of 34 years Angeline (nee Blatsioris)
Barthel and sister Elizabeth McCathren.
Robert was a
veteran of WWII and served as a Flight Engineer on a PBY (Flying Goose). He
was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, during the war and came home where he soon
married Angeline Blatsioris and became a General Contractor. He designed and
built many restaurants such as the original Around The Clock on Broadway in
Merrillville and Arman’s restaurant in South Haven, which later became The
Rosewood Grill. He loved to collect magazines and designing ideas for
inventions.
Memorial services
will be held at Augsburg Evangelical Lutheran Church, 100 N. Mineral Springs
Rd., Porter, Ind., at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 16.
A Celebration of
Life will be held at Clancy’s Irish Pub, 2542 Portage Mall, Portage, Ind.,
on Sunday, March 16, at 3 p.m. Friends and relatives are invited to attend.
Arrangements are
being handled by Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 6941 Central Ave., Portage.
