Service set for Joseph Royko

Joseph Louis Royko of Chesterton passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2011 in Valparaiso. He was 74.

He was born July 29, 1936 in Porter to Andrew and Louise Royko, who preceded him in death.

Joseph is survived by his sons, Joseph L. (wife Pam) Royko Jr. of Valparaiso, Patrick A. Royko of Chesterton, and Frank A. (Helena) Royko of Chesterton; daughters Rose M. (husband Terry) Lipniskis of Chesterton and Sue J. Schwartz of Valparaiso; brother Andrew (Diane) Royko Jr. of Chesterton; sisters Marian Chaney of Valparaiso, Christine (Ambrose) Byrne of Illinois and Louise (Jim) Stowe of Chesterton; and grandchildren Adam Waldier, Cortney and Taylor Lipniskis, Austin and Nathan Schwartz, Gabriella and Zachary Royko, and Dalton Royko.

He was preceded in death by his first wife and mother to his children, Patricia Royko; brothers Frank, John, Anthony and first brother Andrew; and sisters Mary Siorek, Barbara Wagner, Frances Berndt and Anna Royko.

Joseph worked for NIPSCO as a Lineman until retiring in 1974. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Joseph was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Porter VFW, Chesterton American Legion and 40 and 8, the Chesterton Moose Lodge, and the Westchester Horseshoe League. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a Georgia and Florida snowbird.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, April 11 at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 638 N. Calumet Road, Chesterton, with Father Dennis Blaney officiating and Father James Meade to concelebrate. Burial will follow at Chesterton Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday, April 10 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton. Memorials may be made to the VNA Hospice Center of Porter County.
