Memorial service set for Alan Sandberg

Former Chesterton resident Alan Sandberg died on Dec. 11, 2010 at 9 a.m. in the care of Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix, Arizona with his wife, Julie, and his sister Betty at his side. He was 72.

He was born August 6, 1938 to Dan and Anne (Petruka) Sandberg. He graduated from East Chicago Washington High School in 1956 and joined the Air Force. He served for three years as a weather observer at Woodbridge AFB, Woodbridge, England. He attended Purdue University and never lost his love for the Boilermakers. On a cold, sleeting day in January, 1962 in West Lafayette, he married Julia (Julie) Miller of Clarks Hill, Ind. In 1997, he retired after 31 years with Bethlehem Steel. Alan and Julie lived in Chesterton for 37 years before moving to Peoria, Ariz. in 2004.

Along with his wife, he is survived by three children Chris Sandberg (Christina) of Winter Garden, Fla.; Kirsten Sandberg of New York City; and Jacob Sandberg (Rachael) of Winamac, Ind.; grandchildren Christopher, William, Molly and Ethan Sandberg of Winter Springs and Karsten and Amaylia of Winamac; brother Jeri; sisters Betty Sandberg of Peoria, Ariz., Joan Barabas of Highland, and Kay Wilson (Paul) of Michigan City; special cousin Tom Saprony of Westminster, Colo.; Suzanne Price, mother of Christopher, William, Molly and Ethan, of Winter Springs; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter Mina Anne; sister June Butts; and brothers Buddy and Dale Sandberg.

Private interment took place at the American Lutheran Church of Sun City Columbarium following services at the church on Dec. 20, 2010. A memorial service will take place at Augsburg Evangelical Lutheran Church in Porter on May 14 at 1:30 p.m. Memorials maybe given to Augusburg Church in Porter; Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E.
