Harry Lewis, Sr. dies at 77

Chesterton resident Harry S. Lewis Sr., 77. died on Saturday, April 9, 2010.

He was born on March 4, 1934, in Wilkensburg, Pa., the son of Fred and Anne (Beals) Lewis, who preceded him in death.

On Dec. 26, 1953, in Midland, Pa., he married Dena Whittacre, who survives in Chesterton.

He is also survived by two daughters, Kari (James) Murray of Chesterton and Maggie Lewis of Indianapolis; two sons, William (Brenda) Lewis of Tequesta, Fla., and Harry S. Lewis Jr. of Madison, Ala.; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three brothers; and four sisters.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Ted; and by a grandson, Scott Lewis.

Harry was a salesman. Over his long career he worked for Safety First Supply, Rubin Brothers in Chicago, SafeGuard America in Illinois, and at the Chesterton Tribune.

He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, was stationed in Texas, and achieved the rank of staff sergeant.

Harry belonged to the American Society of Safety Engineers, was a charter member of the Duneland Dingalings, and was active in Indian Guides and State Park Little League.

He also served on the Chesterton Utility Service Board in the 70s and for a time as its president.

Harry was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S. Second St. in Chesterton, is arranging cremation. No services are scheduled.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the VNA Horton Hospice in Valparaiso.
