Dorothy Proffitt service set

Dorothy J. Proffitt of Porter passed away Sunday, Feb. 13 in Valparaiso. She was 87.

Born Jan. 24, 1924 in Chicago, she was the daughter of Vernon L. and Georgia E. (Withall) Tierney, who preceded her in death.

Dorothy is survived by her sons, Scott (wife Marsha) Proffitt and Michael Proffitt, both of Chesterton; and grandchild, Bennett Proffitt.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Laurence G. Tierney, and sister, Mary Louise Tierney.

Dorothy graduated from Chesterton High School in 1942. She formerly worked in the office for Jaymar Ruby and as a cashier at Smedman’s. Earlier in her life, she taught preschool and was also a teacher’s assistant at Yost School. Throughout her life, Dorothy enjoyed sewing, art and theater. During her retirement, Dorothy participated in Brush with the Masters through the Duneland Schools.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 15 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 638 N. Calumet Road, Chesterton. Cremation will be performed by Heritage Crematory, Portage.
