Ellie Fisher dies at 88

Nellie Fisher, the mother of a Chesterton resident, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at her home in Michigan City. She was 88.

She was born Feb. 15, 1921, in Selmer, Tenn., the daughter of James and Deccie (Wardlow) Milligan, who preceded her in death.

On April 1, 1939, in Tyronza, Ariz., she married George W. Fischer, who also preceded her in death.

She is survived by her daughters, Alice Fay (Larry) Westergren of Chesterton and Elizabeth Piekielniak and Wilma Hilbish, both of Michigan City; grandchildren, Dr. David Drake, Pam (Jon) Sissons, Beth (Marc) Cizewski, Becky Piekielniak, Mary Ellen (Paul) Tilden, and Jonathan (Christy) Westergren; and great-grandchildren, Patrick, Tessa, Greta, and Petra Tilden, Alison, Riley, and Brady Westergren, Jackson and Evan Cizewski, and Zach Sissons.

She was preceded in death by her son-in-laws Don Drake and Eugene Piekielniak and her grandson Donald Drake.

Mrs. Fisher moved to Michigan City in 1952 and was employed at Burnham Glove and Zip Food on Elston Street. She was appreciated by all of her customers and was known as the “Zip Lady.”

Funeral services, Pastor Dennis Carroll officiating, are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at Carlisle Funeral Home, 613 Washington St. in Michigan City. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Michigan City.

Visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday.
