Eli Nahod dies at 77

Eli Nahod, of Westville, passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at his home. He was 77.

He was born on Sept. 23, 1930 in Gary, the son of George and Stella (Savich) Nahod, both of whom preceded him in death.

He was married on June 23, 1975, in Griffith, to Jinni Vanzo, who survives of Westville.

Eli is also survived by sons, Joe Poracky of Frankfort, Ill., Steve Nahod of Portage, and Dan Nahod of Denver, Colo.; daughters, Denise (Mark) Powers of Hebron, and Johanna (Sean) Carlin of Fishers; brothers, Dwayne (Lorraine) Nahod of Merrillville, and Joe (Sophie) Nahod of Fairfield Glade, Tenn.; grandchildren, Jacob Carlin, Adam Nahod and Eric Nahod; and many loving nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors and extended family.

He was also preceded in death by brothers, George (Alberta) Nahod and Michael (Mesho) Nahod, and sister, Elaine Gregor.

Eli was a resident of Jackson Township for 10 years, coming from Griffith and Hebron. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and a graduate of Lew Wallace High School. Eli worked as a Millwright for the Budd Company, retiring in 1982. After retirement, Eli did consultant work for Claude Miller, Inc. He was a member of the VFW in Griffith, and a former member of the Hebron Lions Club. Eli was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a Military Policeman in Germany during the Korean Conflict.

Funeral services, Rev. James Meade officiating, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 10 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 638 N. Calumet Rd., Chesterton. Cremation will follow at Heritage Crematory, Portage.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, May 9 at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton.
