Johnnie Mae Downey dies at 63

Johnnie Mae Downey, of Chesterton, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2007 at Porter Valparaiso Hospital Campus, Valparaiso. She was 63.

She was born May 26, 1944 in Pitkin, La., the daughter of Davide and Olive (Maricle) Thompson, both of whom preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband Mort Downey of Chesterton.

She is also survived by two sons, Dewayne (Dianne) Phegley and Craig (Amy Wood) Phegley, both of Michigan City; one grandson, Coltin Phegley, of Michigan City; three stepchildren, Richard (Wendy) Downey, Jr. of Wis., David (Terri) Downey of Chesterton, Judy David of Valparaiso; nine step-grandchildren; three brothers, Roy (Susan) Thompson, of La., L.C. (Doris) Thompson, of Miss., Jackie (Catherine) Thompson, of La.; three sisters, Lucy Gibson, of LaFayette, Ind., Bernice LaBlonc, of La., Judy (Glen) Martin, of Ala.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Elsie Mae Thompson and Joy McBride.

Johnnie was a member of the American Legion Post #170 Auxiliary, Chesterton. She was an avid Bingo and card player, and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who always put her family first.

Funeral services, Rev. James C. Mills officiating, will be at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17 at White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S. 2nd St., Chesterton. Cremation will follow.

The family will receive friends Friday from 5 p.m. until time of service at 8 p.m. at White-Love Funeral Home.
