Bonnie Retha 'Walk' Thompson dies at 98

Bonnie Retha (Walk) Thompson, of Chesterton passed away Thursday, Feb. 22 at The Waters of Duneland in Chesterton. She was 98.

She was born Jan. 11, 1919 at her home in Sheldon, Ill., the daughter of Robert and Emma (Webster) Cole.

In 1928, she married William Earl Walk, who preceded her in death Oct. 23, 1949. In 1970, she married Almer Dall Thompson, who preceded her in death in 1981.

She is survived by a daughter, Joanne (Ron) Martinson of Chesterton; a son, Robert (Carol) Walk of Indianapolis; four grandchildren, Greg (Bridget) Martinson of Chesterton, Gretchen (Tom) Anderson of Gurnee, Ill., Jeff (Gina) Walk and Janet Bell, both of Indianapolis; nine great-grandchildren, Justin and Austin Martinson of Chesterton, Rachel and Janelle Winter of Gurnee, Ill., Katie Mitchell, Sarah and Annie Walk, all of Indianapolis, Sara and Logan Anderson of Wisconsin and sister-in-law, Esther Liehr of Colo.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Esther Strickler.

Before marrying, she taught school in a one-room school house in Watseka, Ill. After her first husbandís death, she continued the operation of their restaurant business, Bakerís Hamburgers in Michigan City. Later she worked at Carstens Department Store in Michigan City. She was an active member of the Wesley Daughters group of the First United Methodist Church in Michigan City and a member of the Ruth Circle at the First United Methodist Church of Chesterton.

Funeral services, Pastor Erik Bernth officiating, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27 at White-Love Funeral Home, 525 S. 2nd St., Chesterton. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the White-Love Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to the charity of the donorís choice.
