New Porter County C19 cases at 17

Back To Front Page

The Porter County Health Department was reporting this morning 17 new COVID-19 cases over the last 24 hours (22 new cases on Monday), to bring the total so far to 1,367, up from 1,350 on Monday.

Of those 17 new cases, 10--or 59 percent--were diagnosed among the younger demographics: one in the 0-19 (162 total); six in the 20-29 (275 total); two in the 30-39 (201 total); and one in the 40-49 (230 total).

According to the records of the Chesterton Tribune, between July 1 and Thursday, Aug. 6, fully 406 of the 529 new cases in Porter County were diagnosed in persons under 50: or 77 percent.

However, over the last five days--since Thursday, Aug. 6--that proportion has dropped precipitously. Of the 117 new cases reported in that period, only 65 were diagnosed in persons under 50: or 56 percent. That fact would seem to indicate that the surge of new cases in the younger demographics in July and into the first week of August has begun to spread into the older and more vulnerable population.

Nevertheless, that surge has not been accompanied by any spikes in hospitalizations or deaths.

Three patients are currently hospitalized and 1,128 have recovered, both unchanged from Monday. Total active cases right now in Porter County: 198, up from 181 on Monday.

No additional deaths were reported today. To date, 41 Porter County residents have succumbed to COVID-19.

To date, 101 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Porter County’s long-term care facilities, 27 have died, no one is currently hospitalized, and 74 have recovered, all unchanged from Friday. The Health Department has not reported a new COVID-19 case in a long-term facility here since June 30.

For the record, according to the Health Department:

-- Positive cases are the number of individuals who get tested and have a positive test result. If an individual has multiple tests and receives multiple positive test results, it only counts as one positive case.

-- Positive antibody tests are not reported as positive cases.
