Four more COVID deaths in Porter County; cases top 10,000

COVID-19 has claimed the lives of four more Porter County residents, the Porter County Health Department (PCHD) reported Tuesday.

Two were Center Township residents; one, a Portage Township resident; and one, a Union Township resident. All were in the 70-79 age group or older.

Two of the four victims resided in a long term care facility (LTCF).

To date, 126 Porter County residents have lost their lives to COVID-19. Deaths by township: in Duneland, 13 Liberty residents; 10 Westchester; and two Jackson. Outside of Duneland: 51 Center residents; 41 Portage; seven Union; one Boone; and one Washington.

Deaths by age group: five in the 40-49; 12 in the 50-59; 17 in the 60-69; 27 in the 70-79; 34 in the 80-89; and 31 in the 90-and-over.

In the 39 days since Oct. 30, COVID-19 has claimed the lives of 70 Porter County residents. In the 15 days since Monday, Nov. 23, 39 residents have died.

New Cases

Also on Tuesday, PCHD reported 153 new COVID-19 cases over the previous 24 hours (130 new cases on Monday), to bring the total so far to 10,090.

As of Tuesday, PCHD was putting the 0-19 demographic at 1.4K cases; the 20-29 at 1.8K; the 30-39 at 1.6K; the 40-49 at 1.6K; the 50-59 at 1.6K; and the 60-69 at 1.1K.

The other demographic totals as of Tuesday: 70-79, 616 cases (604 on Monday); 80-89, 328 cases (321); and 90-and-over, 136 (136).

Hospitalizations

Meanwhile, PCHD reported 40 hospitalizations on Tuesday, up from 34 on Monday.

Of Tuesday’s 40 hospitalizations, 12 were residents of long term care facilities (LTCFs).

LTCFs

Of the new cases reported on Tuesday, three were residents of a long term care facility, to bring the total so far to 487, up from 484 on Monday.

Of those 487 LTCF cases, 12 were hospitalized on Tuesday, up from five on Monday; 347 have recovered, unchanged from Monday; and 73 have died, up from 71 on Monday.

As of Tuesday, there were 67 active COVID-19 cases in Porter County LTCFs, up from 66 on Monday.

Over the first six months of the pandemic--from March 17, when PCHD first started tracking COVID-19 numbers, to Oct. 16--a total of 119 cases was reported by LTCFs. In the 53 days since Oct. 16 that number has grown by fully 368 new cases, or 309 percent.

Active Cases

PCHD reported 8,725 recoveries on Tuesday, up by one from 8,724 on Monday.

Total active cases in Porter County as of Tuesday, after subtracting the 7,190 recoveries and 126 deaths: 1,239, up from 1,091 on Monday.

Other Indicators

-- New cases per 100,000 residents as of Tuesday: 644 (636 on Monday; 541 on Dec. 1).

-- Unique-individual positivity rate as of Nov. 30: 23.6 percent (23.5 percent on Nov. 29; 22.3 percent on Nov. 23).

-- Total-test positivity rate as of Nov. 30: 15.0 percent (14.8 percent on Nov. 29; 12.7 percent on Nov. 23). Note: both positivity rates lag up to eight days due to Indiana State Department of Health reporting methods.

Duneland Cases

-- Westchester: 1,154 cases (1,132 on Monday). Active cases: 121 (99 on Monday).

-- Liberty: 584 cases (573). Active cases: 61 (50).

-- Jackson: 209 cases (205). Active cases: 22 (18).

-- Pine: 49 cases (48). Active cases: three (two).

Other Townships

-- Portage: 3,192 cases (3,145 on Monday). Active cases: 385 (339 on Monday).

-- Center: 2,923 (2,889). Active cases: 383 (356).

-- Washington: 335 cases (331). Active cases: 39 (35).

-- Union: 556 cases (546). Active cases: 78 (69).
