COVID claims another Porter County life

Another Porter County resident has succumbed to COVID-19, the Porter County Health Department (PCHD) reported after deadline on Thursday. The victim was a Center Township resident in the 80-89 age group, not residing in a long term care facility.

To date, 153 Porter County residents have lost their lives to COVID-19. Deaths by township: in Duneland, 15 Liberty residents; 10 Westchester; and three Jackson. Outside of Duneland: 66 Center residents; 50 Portage; seven Union; one Boone; and one Washington.

Deaths by age group: five in the 40-49; 12 in the 50-59; 21 in the 60-69; 34 in the 70-79; 45 in the 80-89; and 36 in the 90-and-over.

In the 24 days since Monday, Nov. 23, 66 residents have died. In the 10 days since Monday, Dec. 7, 34 have died.

New Cases

Also on Thursday, PCHD reported 143 new COVID-19 cases over the previous 24 hours (182 on Wednesday), to bring the total so far to 11,202.

As of Thursday, PCHD was putting the 0-19 demographic at 1.5K cases; the 20-29 at 2K; the 30-39 at 1.7K; the 40-49 at 1.8K; the 50-59 at 1.7K; and the 60-69 at 1.3K.

The other demographic totals as of Thursday: 70-79, 670 cases (664 on Wednesday); 80-89, 361 cases (360); and 90-and-over, 146 (145).

Hospitalizations

PCHD also reported 37 hospitalizations on Thursday, up from 35 on Wednesday. Of Thursday’s 37 hospitalizations, seven were residents of long term care facilities (LTCFs).

LTCFs

Of the new cases reported on Thursday, two were residents of a long term care facility, to bring the total so far to 506, up from 504 on Wednesday.

Of those 506 LTCF cases, seven were hospitalized on Thursday, unchanged from Wednesday; 400 have recovered, unchanged from Wednesday; and 88 have died.

As of Thursday there were 18 active COVID-19 cases in Porter County LTCFs, up from 16 on Wednesday.

Active Cases

PCHD reported 9,516 recoveries on Thursday, unchanged from Wednesday. Total active cases in Porter County as of Thursday, after subtracting the 9,516 recoveries and 153 deaths: 1,533, up from 1,391 on Wednesday.

Other Indicators

-- New cases per 100,000 residents as of Thursday: 541 (521 on Wednesday; 591 on Dec. 10).

-- Unique-individual positivity rate as of Dec. 9: 22.0 percent (23.2 percent on Dec. 8; 26.5 percent on Dec. 2).

-- All-test positivity rate as of Dec. 9: 11.6 percent (11.9 percent on Dec. 8; 15.2 percent on Dec. 2). Note: both positivity rates lag up to eight days due to Indiana State Department of Health reporting methods.

Duneland Cases by Township

-- Westchester: 1,291 cases (1,282 on Thursday). Active cases: 183 (174 on Thursday).

-- Liberty: 644 cases (640). Active cases: 80 (76).

-- Jackson: 225 cases (221). Active cases: 27 (23).

-- Pine: 60 cases (59). Active cases: 13 (12).

Other Townships

-- Portage: 3,497 cases (3,451 on Thursday). Active cases: 428 (382 on Thursday).

-- Center: 3,264 (3,219). Active cases: 455 (411).

-- Washington: 367 cases (361). Active cases: 52 (46).

-- Union: 627 cases (617). Active cases: 109 (99).

-- Boone: 368 cases (367). Active cases: 60 (59)).

-- Pleasant: 202 cases (201). Active cases: 43 (42).

-- Morgan: 282 cases (276). Active cases 32 (26).
