COVID claims 10 more lives in Porter County

Ten more Porter County residents have succumbed to COVID-19, the Porter County Health Department reported Tuesday.

Six of the victims were Center Township residents; one, a Liberty Township resident; one, a Union Township resident; one, a Boone Township resident; and one, a Portage resident.

Six victims were in the 70-79 demographic; two, in the 80-89; one, in the 60-69; and one, in the 30-39, the youngest Porter County resident to die of COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

Five were residents of long term care facilities (LTCFs).

To date, 173 Porter County residents have lost their lives to COVID-19. Deaths by township: in Duneland, 17 Liberty residents; 11 Westchester; and three Jackson. Outside of Duneland: 75 Center residents; 55 Portage; eight Union; two Boone; one Washington; and one Pleasant.

Deaths by age group: one in the 30-39; five in the 40-49; 14 in the 50-59; 22 in the 60-69; 42 in the 70-79; 52 in the 80-89; and 37 in the 90-and-over.

New Cases

Also on Tuesday, PCHD reported 86 new COVID-19 cases over the previous 24 hours (96 new cases on Monday), to bring the total so far to 12,612.

PCHD repeated its caution, first issued on Sunday, that the precipitous drop in new cases over the last few days is most likely the result of most testing sites being closed over the Christmas weekend, and “should not be considered as a true indicator of community spread.”

As of Tuesday, PCHD was putting the  0-19 demographic at 1.7K cases; the 20-29 at 2.2K; the 30-39 at 1.9K; the 40-49 at 2K; the 50-59 at 1.9K; and the 60-69 at 1.4K.

The other demographic totals as of Tuesday: 70-79, 762 cases (751 on Monday); 80-89, 407 cases (403); and 90-and-over, 159 (159).


PCHD also reported 37 hospitalizations on Tuesday, up from 34 on Monday.

Of Tuesday’s hospitalizations, seven were residents of long term care facilities (LTCFs).


Of the new cases reported on Tuesday, two were residents  of a long term care facility. The total number of LTCF cases: 571, up from 569 on  Monday. 

Of those 571 LTCF cases, seven were hospitalized on Tuesday, up from six on Monday; 417 have recovered, unchanged from Monday; and 101 have died, up from 96 on Monday.

As of Tuesday, there were 53 active COVID-19 cases in Porter County LTCFs, down from 56 on Tuesday.

Active Cases

PCHD reported 11,200 recoveries on Tuesday, unchanged from Monday

Total active cases in Porter County as of Tuesday, after subtracting the 11,200 recoveries and 173 deaths: 1,239, up from 1,163 on Monday.

Other Indicators

PCHD  recently introduced other indicators on its COVID-19 dashboard: a seven-day rolling average of new cases per 100,000 residents; a seven-day rolling average of the unique-individual positivity rate; and a seven-day rolling average of the all-test positivity rate.

* New cases per 100,000 residents as of Tuesday: 437 (461 on Tuesday; 582 on Dec. 22).

* Unique-individual positivity rate as of Dec. 21: 24.8 percent (25.1 percent on Dec. 20; 21.3 percent on Dec. 14).

* All-test positivity rate as of Dec. 21: 10.8 percent (10.1 on Dec. 20; 10.0 percent on Dec. 14).  Note: both positivity rates lag up to eight days due to Indiana State Department of Health reporting methods.

Duneland Cases by Township

* Westchester: 1,471 cases (1,465 on Monday). Active cases: 156 (150 on Monday).

* Liberty: 746 cases (737). Active cases: 90 (139)

* Jackson: 255 cases (250). Active cases: 25 (20).

* Pine: 66 cases (66). Active cases: three (three).

Other Townships

* Portage: 3,821 cases (3,805 on Monday). Active cases: 293 (278 on Monday).

* Center: 3,671 (3,615). Active cases: 356 (337).
