4 more COVID deaths in Porter County

COVID-19 claimed the lives of four more Porter County residents over the weekend, the Porter County Health Department repors.

Two were Portage Township residents; one, a Union Township resident; and one, a Center Township resident.

One was in the 50-59 age group; one, in the 70-79; one, in the 80-89; and one, in the 90-and-over.

One of the four victims resided in a long term care facility (LTCF).

To date, 122 Porter County residents have lost their lives to COVID-19. Deaths by township: in Duneland, 13 Liberty residents; 10 Westchester; and two Jackson. Outside of Duneland: 49 Center residents; 40 Portage; six Union; one Boone; and one Washington.

Deaths by age group (not yet fully updated) five in the 40-49; 12 in the 50-59; 17 in the 60-69; 26 in the 70-79; 31 in the 80-89; and 29 in the 90-and-over.

In the 37 days since Oct. 30, COVID-19 has claimed the lives of 66 Porter County residents. In the 13 days since Monday, Nov. 23, 35 residents have died.

New Cases

PCHD was also reporting 534 new cases over the 72-hour period Friday-Sunday, to bring the total so far to 9,807.

PCHD reported 189 new cases on Friday (157 on Thursday); 206 on Saturday; and 139 on Sunday.

As of Sunday, PCHD was putting the 0-19 demographic at 1.3K cases; the 20-29 at 1.7K; the 30-39 at 1.5K; the 40-49 at 1.5K; the 50-59 at 1.5K; and the 60-69 at 1.1K.

The other demographic totals as of Sunday: 70-79, 593 cases (556 on Thursday); 80-89, 316 cases (296); and 90-and-over, 136 (126).


PCHD reported 34 hospitalizations on Sunday, down from 57 on Thursday. Of Sunday’s 34 hospitalizations, four were residents of long term care facilities (LTCFs).


Of the new cases reported Friday-Sunday, 22 were residents of long term care facilities, to bring the total so far to 483, up from 461 on Thursday.

Of those 483 LTCF cases, four were hospitalized on Sunday, down from 10 on Thursday; 269 have recovered, unchanged from Thursday; and 71 have died, up from 70 on Thursday.

As of Sunday there were 143 active COVID-19 cases in Porter County LTCFs, up from 122 on Thursday.

Over the first six months of the pandemic--from March 17, when PCHD first started tracking COVID-19 numbers, to Oct. 16--a total of 119 cases was reported by LTCFs. In the 51 days since Oct. 16 that number has grown by fully 364 new cases, or 304 percent.

Active Cases

PCHD reported 7,190 recoveries on Sunday, unchanged from Thursday

Total active cases in Porter County as of Sunday after subtracting the 7,190 recoveries and 122 deaths: 2,495, up from 1,965 on Thursday

Other Indicators

PCHD recently introduced other indicators on its COVID-19 dashboard: a seven-day rolling average of new cases per 100,000 residents; a seven-day rolling average of the unique-individual positivity rate; and a seven-day rolling average of the all-test positivity rate.

-- New cases per 100,000 residents as of Sunday: 664 (631 on Saturday; 597 on Nov. 30).

-- Unique-individual positivity rate as of Nov. 28: 22.9 percent (21.9 percent on Nov. 27; 22.4 percent on Nov. 21).

-- Total-test positivity rate as of Nov. 28: 13.5 percent (12.7 percent on Nov. 27; 12.7 percent on Nov. 21). Note: both positivity rates lag up to eight days due to Indiana State Department of Health reporting methods.

Duneland Cases

-- Westchester: 1,124 cases (1,067 on Thursday). Active cases: 235 (178 on Thursday).

-- Liberty: 570 cases (541). Active cases: 128 (99).

-- Jackson: 200 cases (194). Active cases: 51 (45).

-- Pine: 47 cases (46). Active cases: 14 (13).

Other Townships

-- Portage: 3,110 cases (2,960 on Thursday). Active cases: 766 (618 on Thursday).

-- Center: 2,852 (2,680). Active cases: 778 (607).

-- Washington: 318 cases (304). Active cases: 76 (62).

-- Union: 532 cases (498). Active cases: 121 (88).
