Kevin Dempsey, president and CEO of the American Iron and Steel Institute, is lauding President-Elect Biden’s nominee for U.S. Trade Representative, in a statement released on Thursday.

“The American Iron and Steel Institute welcomes the President-Elect’s nomination of Katherine Tai to be the U.S. Trade Representative,” Dempsey said. “She is eminently qualified to serve in this position, having served with distinction previously at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative and on Capitol Hill. Her extensive work on USMCA and China issues is important to the steel industry, and we have always found Katherine to be willing to listen to industry concerns on issues that are critical to steel producers and their workers. We look forward to working with Katherine and members of the incoming administration to ensure aggressive trade enforcement and to address the international trade challenges facing the American steel industry.”

Domestic steel shipments slip in November

The American Iron and Steel Institute is reporting that in November U.S. steel mills shipped 6,747,709 net tons (NT), down 1.3 percent from October and down 14.7 percent from the year-ago period.

Shipments for the first 10 months of the year totaled 67,197,068 NT, down 16.5 percent from the year-ago.

Significant month-over-month changes in October include hot-dipped galvanized sheet and strip, up 3 percent; cold-rolled sheet, up 3 percent; and hot-rolled sheet, up 2 percent.
