We have been concerned about the deteriorating condition of our parks for sometime. The parks are an extremely important part of Chesterton’s quality of life and is the newcomers first look at how our community cares for itself. Right now that look is not very good.

Money for upkeep and new projects are important. But the fact is many, many things could be done now with the present staff and budget to vastly improve the appearance and safety of the parks.

We are hearing complaints from Chesterton Citizens who have not written to the Park Board, Town Board or newspaper who are speaking of the dirty and unkempt conditions of the park. We hear of families who will not take their children to Friendship Park because of its condition. We know of a young mother who had to clean the restrooms at this particular park because they were so filthy.

These are not big money items. These items are general cleanliness and maintenance. If the Park Board does not see the current condition and cannot at the least see that the condition be improved, we might be asking the wrong person to be changed. Let’s quit whining and start problem solving.

Very Sincerely,

Judy Chaplin
