Voice of the People

Regarding the request to the Porter Town Council that the name of Hjelm Road be changed, it should be noted that the Hjelm family arrives in the area around 1873. The Hjelms were true pioneers. Hjelm Road was not named for Alvin Hjelm, the Chesterton Town Marshall, but rather for his ancestors. The Hjelm name reflects the Swedish heritage of the area. Any change should not be permitted.

Westchester Township Museum can provide more information on the Hjelm family.
