With summer electric bills not far away, now is a good time to change at
least a few of the light bulbs in your home or business.
Compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs offer many advantages over traditional
incandescent bulbs. While CFL bulbs may cost more on the front end, they more
than pay for themselves. Compared to traditional bulbs, CFL bulbs only need
one-fourth as much energy to produce the same light, last up to 10 times
longer, and don't give off as much heat. That eases the workload on your air
conditioner, may save you money on your electric bills, and can help reduce
power plant emissions.
It is important to dispose of used CFL bulbs at a recycling center because
they include small amounts of mercury. However, the benefits of these bulbs
make them a great choice for all consumers. What's more, CFL technology has
come a long way in the last few years, with bulbs now offering more pleasant
light and coming in many shapes, sizes and wattages.
