Porter cancels meetings chicken input postponed

Back To Front Page

All Porter meetings scheduled for Tuesday --- the Stormwater Management Board, the Redevelopment Commission and the Town Council --- have been canceled.

The Stormwater Board notice listed lack of a quorum for its reason and the RDC a lack of business. The Town Council’s 10-word notice gave no reason.

The council previously set Tuesday’s meeting as a public input session after hearing a resident’s May 13 request to allow chickens on smaller residential lots; at that time a neighbor also listed his reasons not to allow it.

Last month council members voiced differing opinions whether town code should be changed and said they needed time to do research and study the matter. Chickens are allowed in Porter on properties of 5 contiguous acres of land; additional restrictions apply.

The same request to allow chickens on smaller lots was made in 2013 by another resident but a decision was never made.

The council cancellation notice did not state whether taking public input on urban chickens would be rescheduled.

As of this morning there was no response to an email seeking comment and clarification sent to council vice-president Jeannine Virtue.
