Jay Craig was named Fire Chief to a standing ovation at the Porter Town Council meeting last night.

Council member Greg Stinson made the announcement. He began, “We’ve been without a fire chief for the better part of three months now. We advertised the position, accepted applications, and have done interviews, and at this point, I’d like to make a motion to hire Lewis T. Craig Jr., also known as Jay, as department head.”

Stinson chuckled and noted that Craig’s employment is contingent upon him passing a criminal background check. The audience joined him in laughing.

The Council voted unanimously to hire Craig. Their decision was met with a standing ovation from the full crowd, and Council members joined in standing to congratulate Chief Craig.

Craig is moving up from Deputy Fire Chief to succeed his father, Lewis Craig Sr., who served as Fire Chief for 45 years and passed away days after retiring in January.

“You’ve got some big shoes to fill,” Stinson noted. Council President Erik Wagner also took a moment at the end of the meeting to congratulate Craig again. Wagner said to him, “You did a great job in your interview.”

Craig, clearly overwhelmed, said “I’d just like to say thank you to the Council for this opportunity, and to my brothers and sisters at the fire department for their continued support. Without them I wouldn’t be sitting here,” after hugging his young son, who ran over to him while Stinson was talking.
