Harley, the Porter Fire Department’s K-9 partner, is recovering just fine,
after surgery on Wednesday to remove the half tennis ball which the big guy
PFD Assistant Chief--and Harley’s handler--Jay Craig told the Chesterton
Tribune today that Harley is due to come home this afternoon. He’ll be
on seven to 10 days of rest--he needs to eat and drink slowly as he
convalesces--but then he’ll be back on duty.
Craig said that Harley’s usual reward for training is playtime with a tennis
ball. He’s “shredded” dozens of them in the past and there’s never been an
issue but this time, for some reason, Harley swallowed half a ball. “I was
really shocked when that happened,” Craig said.
Among other things, Harley has been trained to track and has assisted in
searches for multiple missing and reportedly suicidal persons.
