County tax snafu forcing town of Porter to borrow

Back to Front Page

Porter County’s inability to send out 2009 property taxes has claimed another victim.

The Town of Porter held out as long as it could, but at tonight’s Town Council meeting members will discuss resolutions to borrow money to meet daily expenses.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the town hall, 303 Franklin St. The borrowing could take the form of tax anticipation warrants, which are a temporary bank loan, and/or an interfund town loan from the Porter Redevelopment Commission.

The commission will discuss town finances when it meets at 6 p.m. tonight.

Also on the commission’s agenda is a report from town director of engineering Matt Keiser, a report on possible purchase of additional sanitary-sewer capacity from the town of Chesterton, and an update on construction of two planned Porter hike/bike trails including whether to use a bridge instead of a tunnel to span U.S. 20 at Howe Road.

In addition to the loan discussion, the Town Council agenda lists amending the 2009 salary ordinance and consideration of a 2010 salary ordinance. An ordinance amending the employee handbook is listed, as are reports from department heads.

Both the Town Council and Redevelopment Commission give the public the opportunity to address them under audience participation early in the meeting.

At 5 p.m. tonight the Porter Stormwater Management Board convenes, also at the town hall.

That agenda lists reports from Keiser and Public Works superintendent Brenda Brueckheimer, replacement of a culvert at 10 Hjelm Rd., a request to combine lots at 580 N. 3rd St., Wagner Hills drainage of rear lots to a retention pond, and the 2010 Stormwater Department budget. Public comment at this meeting comes just prior to adjournment.
