There are a lot of vacant homes in Chesterton and as the weather turns fine
the yards of those homes will be getting weedy.
Building Commissioner Dave Novak has this message to folks who live near
those homes: Be patient.
“It’s not a quick process,” Novak told the Town Council at its meeting
Monday night. “We’ve got to track down the owner.”
Often it’s unclear who the owner—or the responsible party—even is, Novak
noted. “Many of these vacant homes are in limbo between the bank and the
owner. We don’t know who the responsible party is.”
Novak did say that he’s consulting with Associate Town Attorney Chuck
Parkinson about any changes in Indiana Code which may make the situation
easier.
“We’re trying to see if we can speed up the process.”
