Town of Chesterton residents currently living in new homes under temporary
occupancy permits have until May 1 to meet the conditions under which those
permits were granted.
Building Commissioner Dave Novak reminded folks at the Town Council’s
meeting Monday night that it’s better to get the work done sooner rather
than later.
Temporary occupancy permits are granted when weather conditions--read
winter weather conditions--make it difficult to complete exterior
landscaping required under the Zoning Ordinance or Town Standards: for
instance, the installation of eight feet of sod from the curb (sod farms are
closed in the winter), or final grading (the ground is frozen in the
winter).
