Folks excited about
the boxcar restroom coming to Thomas Centennial Park and interested in
helping to defray the cost of the project can do their part, by rounding up
to the nearest dollar when they shop at Hopkins Ace Hardware, 325 S. Calumet
Road in Chesterton.
Through April 18,
customers will be asked if they want to round up their purchase. That spare
change will then be put toward a crowdfunding platform--Patronicity--with a
goal of raising $31,000 by April 20. If that goal is met, the Indiana
Housing and Community Development Authority, through its CreatINg Places
initiative, will double that amount, for a total pot of $62,000.
Mark Hopkins, owner
of Hopkins Ace, told the Chesterton Park Board at its meeting Tuesday night
that round-ups are averaging around $50 per day, and that he expects to
raise a total of $2,000 by April 18. Hopkins has also pledged to donate many
of the plumbing and other supplies with which to outfit the boxcar restroom.
Folks who wish to
donate directly to the crowdfunding platform may do so at
