Planners get first look at Wabash Avenue duplex project

The Chesterton Advisory Planning Commission elected officers and conducted a preliminary hearing for a subdivision at its meeting Thursday night.

Planners held a brief reorganization discussion and decided that George Stone will continue as President, and Fred Owens will succeed Jeff Trout as Vice-President. Gail Murawski will continue as Secretary.

Meanwhile, Southshore Development Group LLC sought a preliminary hearing on the Wabash Avenue subdivision c/o Charles Ray. Ray requested that the case be forwarded to the Plat Committee because the subdivision, as planned, will contain fewer than five lots on fewer than five acres. Specifically, the parcel is one acre that will be divided into four plots for duplexes.

Planner Stone noted that the subdivision would be the only residential parcel in that area of Grant Street and Wabash Ave. Town Engineer Mark O’Dell said the plans include driveways that exit onto both Grant and Wabash, but mentioned that the town won’t allow any residents of the subdivision to use Grant Street for parking. This is an issue which the Board of Zoning Appeals may want to consider, O’Dell added.

Ray said he is planning to request three variances for the project from the BZA, and would like to have those in order before appearing before the Plat Committee. Planners voted unanimously to refer the case to the Plat Committee, which will meet at a yet to be determined date.
