No more plowing of cul-de-sacs on overtime in snowfalls of 2 inches or less

Winter’s relentless assault on Duneland in January is costing the Chesterton Street Department plenty in overtime.

In an effort to shave that expense, Street Commissioner John Schnadenberg has announced a change in his plow drivers’ usual strategy: going forward, crews will no longer clear cul-de-sacs in subdivisions, on an overtime basis, during snowfalls of two inches or less.

Those cul-de-sacs will instead be plowed during normal business hours, Schnadenberg told the Town Council at its meeting Monday night.

“There are 50 to 70 cul-de-sacs in town,” he said. “And it takes a long time to plow them.”
