Council to consider rezoning and tax abatement Monday

The Chesterton Town Council will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, June 13, at the town hall.

At that meeting, members will consider an ordinance which would re-zone property at 112 S. 14th Street from B-3 to R-3. The owner of the property, Bill Bennett, wants to raze a residential structure currently on the south end of the property and build a three-plex multi-family building on it. The Advisory Plan Commission unanimously endorsed Bennett’s petition at its May meeting.

Members will also consider an amendment to the 2016 Salary Ordinance which would create the position of “Building Official,” who would assist the Building Commissioner with permit review, enforcement, and administration.

In other business, Benlew Enterprises LLC is seeking to enter into a right-of-way agreement with the town with respect to an unimproved but platted stretch of Westchester Ave., between 22nd Street and 23rd Street. No further details on the agreement were available today.

The council is also scheduled to consider renewing for another year the 10-year tax abatement granted to the Addison Pointe Health & Rehabilitation Center at 780 Dickinson Road. Late last month the Tax Abatement Advisory Committee voted unanimously to endorse renewal, after administrators for the facility--now owned by health Care Properties LLC--indicated that they are in compliance with hiring and hiring preference commitments made by the previous owner in 2006, when the abatement was originally granted. Finally, the council is scheduled to hear from LOK Wishing Foundation on carbon monoxide awareness.
