Chesterton's oldest tree removed

Crews from Erwin Tree Care of Hobart cut and remove large branches from a bur oak tree on Porter Ave. between 3rd and 4th Street this morning. Resident George Stone said the town of Chesterton took an inventory of its trees a few years ago and recognized the tree to be the oldest and largest in the town limits. Stone said the circumference of the tree is 17 feet and is thought to be over 200 years old. A large branch collapsed last spring which Stone said caused damage to the other trees in his yard and his neighbor’s skylight. After more rotting in the tree’s trunk was discovered, Stone decided to have it removed for safety reasons. The town closed the street from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. as workers used a crane to lower and haul limbs. (Tribune photo by Jeff Schultz)
