Variance sought from Burns Harbor's new downtown zoning

The Burns Harbor Board of Zoning Appeals will hear a request to vary the approved uses in the new downtown zoning district when the BZA meets Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the town hall, 1240 N. Boo Rd.

A-1 Towing is seeking to operate a towing business and impound storage yard at 347 W. Melton Rd. (U.S. 20) for vehicles until they can be repaired or removed. The petition notes the location, the former Dean's Automotive, was doing service repair since 1974.

A-1 is located southwest of The Village in Burns Harbor residential development. Earlier this year the town rezoned land along U.S. 20 on its north and south sides near The Village to spur creation of a downtown district the town now lacks. A-1's zoning petition said its towing and impound storage yard will not interfere with Burns Harbor's comprehensive plan because the owners are trying to clean up the property and beautify the area, and it would be a hardship if they had to rent elsewhere to store towed vehicles.

Prior to the BZA at 6:30 p.m. the Burns Harbor Plat Committee, which has jurisdiction over minor property divisions, will meet at the town hall to consider granting secondary or final plat approval to Twin Pines Subdivision. Last month Dwayne Simons received primary plat approval to divide one lot into two at 306 McCoy Lane.
