Chesterton got what it expected from its senior mainstays in Tuesday's Chesterton Girls Track Sectional.

It was the unexpected contributions from its underclassmen that carried the Trojans to the team title.

"I don't know who our athlete of the meet would be -- Stephanie (Fisher) or Katie (Behrendt)? You tell me," Chesterton coach Steve Kearney said. "Katie won two events and was on the (1,600) relay. Stephanie had a first and a second against a girl who could be state champion (Wheeler's Taylor Gilles). The young kids were hungry. I thought if we ran the best we could and Valpo had a couple off races, we had a chance. We ran better than I thought we could." The Trojans amassed 149.5 points to the Vikings' 129.75. making the 1,600 relay that decided the teams' dual meet inconsequential to the outcome. Valpo topped Chesterton in last week's Duneland Athletic Conference meet.

"Usually, (assistant coach) TR (Harlan) tells us if it's close or not (before the 1,600 relay)," Behrendt said. "He didn't tell us anything this time. Everyone knew we had to run our best and we all pulled through. The last time we beat them in a big meet was my (freshman) year, so it was nice to repeat that."

Behrendt was one of three athletes to win two open events, taking the 200 and 400 with respective times of 26.85 and 1:00.63.

"Personally, I run better in the cold," Behrendt said. "Last week and (Monday), my legs were feeling really good and loose. The 400, I knew I could run a good time. I've run with the Valpo girl (Kim Walker) all four years. I had a really good kick at the end. The 200, I had one of my best starts ever, in the trials and in the finals."

Freshman Jordyn Kincy edged Walker for second.

"That's a lot of points," Kearney said.

Fisher won the 300 hurdles in a season-best time of 46.31.

"I was kind of upset because my (300 seed) time was from a month ago and Katie (Beckavac) had a really good race at conference, so she got the lane before me," Fisher said. "I like chasing people. I'd rather have somebody in front of me. Katie's been a great competitor since her sophomore year. She was going to get out hard so I knew I had to, too. That was easily one of the best starts I've had this season."

Fisher also took second in the 100 hurdles with a 15.67.

"I was really nervous before the finals," she said. "I was like, 'Man, if I falst start, I'm done.' I hit a hurdle. Stuff happens. It takes me to the regional and I'll concentrate on being faster there."

Chesterton's production in the jumps was a surprise. Long jumpers Arianne Mahaffey and Kaitlin Loehmer were seeded eighth and 12th, respectively, and finished third and fourth. High jumpers Geena Tumidalsky and Elaina Gerlach were not seeded to score, but likewise took third and fourth, at 5 feet.

Anna Raffin was 100 runner-up and came back to finish fourth in the 200. Other regional qualifiers included Ashley Ballestero (fourth, 100 hurdles), Kristin Mabry (fourth, 100), Tori Schroeder (third, 800), Kristen Homme (third, 1,600) Melanie Buckmaster (fourth, 3,200), Alexis Malay (fourth, pole vault) and Kris Jirtle (sixth/tie, pole vault). The 3,200 relay, minus regular Haley Cushway (sick), and the 1,600 relay were both second, while the 400 relay was third.

"A lot of people came through, no doubt about it," Kearney said.
