Trojans, McCoy play well at Golf Regional

Back To Front Page

As the girls golf season came to an end for Chesterton on Saturday at Battle Ground Golf Club, anticipation for next year was already building, with good reason.

Led by freshman Katelyn McCoy's career-best 84, the Trojans posted a season-low score of 374 to finish 10th in the 18-team field.

"It's awesome," Chesterton coach Jordan Nelson said. "Our philosophy last week, playing Valparaiso Country Club, was to just survive and advance. This is a course where you can come out and shoot a (personal best) at any time. It's a lot more forgiving. If you're not 100 percent on target, you can still score and do well."

McCoy's 84, three shots off a playoff, for an individual state berth, was hinted at Friday, when she carded an 88 in a practice round with Nelson. Her best prior round in competition had been a 94 at Legacy Hills.

"My short game went very well," McCoy said. "My drives could've been better, but they were still decent. I thought I could get around (88) or do better. I like (the course). It's wide open. I like the pace of the greens."

It showed in her putting statistics as McCoy had 30 putts for the round, an average of 1.67 per hole, with nary a three-putt.

"We've done a lot of putting the last week or so, and it all came together really well, highlighted by Katelyn's performance," Nelson said. "Obviously, we put a big emphasis on putting every season, so to have it click the last round of the year, it's awesome."

In addition to McCoy, Brooke Smith shot a 93, Madi Simms 96, Addison Gentry 101 and Peyton Martinson 103.

"Katelyn went out in 40 and everybody else had a little struggle," Nelson said. "It's a super young team. It was the first time in the regional for the freshmen, so there was a little more of the nerves there, but I think they got a little more confident and all five of them broke 50 on the back."

The Trojans' team score improved 12 strokes from 193 to 181. Gentry's score was a 12-shot improvement over last year while Martinson dropped a whopping 31 shots from 134.

"Addison's been trying everything she could to get under 100," Nelson said. "She shot 100 in practice, so she's showing consistency for a freshman. All five of them were around 100. Now we know what they're capable of. They're only going to get stronger. They want to compete, they want to score well consistently. They're going to push each other on the team to keep up. It's a promising end to get ready for next season."

McCoy seconded that sentiment.

"I'm ready to see what next season holds," she said.

Culver Academies won the team title with a 309, followed by Lafayette Jefferson (330) and Crown Point (337), which bested Lake Central on a fifth-score tie-breaker.

C.A.'s Reece Wilson fired a two-under-par 70 for medalist honors. Olivia Wood (Portage), Dominique Colantuono (LC) and Lia Thomas (Michigan City) advanced individually.
