Owen Hallas opened the door. Austin Peterson slammed it shut.

The Chesterton baseball team opened its 2017 season on the road and picked up a key 2-1 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over No. 2 Lake Central on Tuesday.

Hallas ripped the second pitch of the game off of LC starter Joe Graziano over centerfielder Brandon Nisle’s head for a leadoff triple. One out later, Hallas scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 Trojan lead.

Lake Central wasted no time in trying to get the run back as they loaded the bases against Peterson with no outs in the bottom of the first.

A ground ball to Peterson forced the runner at home for the first out and another ball back at the Purdue commit turned into a double play and the end of the inning.

In the second, Brett Roeske drew a leadoff walk and was replaced at first by courtesy runner Patrick Sosby. A single by Tommy Benson put runners on first and second with nobody out.

Grant Brunt’s sacrifice bunt pushed everyone up 90 feet and Sosby scored on Erik Ralph’s sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.

LC again threatened in the sixth inning with a single and double with one out. A sacrifice fly cut the lead in half, but Peterson struck out Brad Loden to end the threat.

In the seventh, Peterson worked quickly and got three easy ground balls to record the victory. On the night, Peterson struck out three and scattered seven hits.

Offensively, Hallas and Ralph each had two hits.

The Trojans return to Lake Central today for a 4:30 p.m. game against the Indians.
