Trojan Wrestlers win 6th straight Sectional Title

Back To Front Page

The Chesterton wrestling team won its sixth straight IHSAA Sectional title in dominant fashion on Saturday at LaPorte.

The Trojans amassed 306 team points to outdistance runner-up LaPorte (244.5). Valparaiso (223.5) was third, followed by New Prairie (209), John Glenn (106), Knox (62), Michigan City (45) and North Judson (44).

“My goal for the team this year was to advance a school record of individuals to the State Finals,” Chesterton coach Chris Joll said. “Before anyone can advance to State, they have to get out of Sectionals. We were able to get 13 out. A consequence of moving that many along is winning the Sectional.

“So far so good.”

The Trojans racked up nine individual championships led by the trio of Brock Ellis (145), Nick Winland (160) and Evan Bates (220). All three picked up their third Sectional title.

“Brock and Evan won by pinning their way through the brackets,” Joll said. “That’s what is expected of them and they continue to not disappoint. Nick had two falls and a nice 3-0 match over a kid he lost to earlier this year.”

Luke Stento (120), Cade Johnston (152) and Gage DeMarco (195) all notched titles.

“Gage was injured at Sectional last year and had his season end abruptly. He had two falls on the day,” Joll said. “Cade had a hard-fought win over another common opponent. He gave up an early takedown, but recovered well to outwork and out-score his opponent.

“Luke’s last time on the mat was at the DAC and it was not a good day. His Sectional finals opponent beat him handily, but this time he scored a quick takedown, turned him twice and earned the fall.”

Finishing out the trophy haul were rookies Aidan Torres (126), Doug Waters (113) and Ethan Contreras (132).

“Doug won a controlled 3-2 match over someone he has face dthree times now. It’s always hard to beat a kid repeatedly, but Doug stuck it out,” Joll said. “Ethan wrestled like a seasoned varsity competitor, getting a fall in the semis and then scoring a major decision in the finals. Aidan is expected to get falls each time he steps on the mat. He keeps coming through for us.”

The Trojans will return to action on Saturday at the IHSAA Crown Point Regional beginning at 9 a.m.
