The Chesterton wrestling team brought home two individual titles and finished fourth as a team at the Duneland Athletic Conference Meet on Saturday at Portage.

Portage won the team title with 275 points, followed by Crown Point (206), Merrillville (193), Chesterton (185), LaPorte (133), Lake Central (80), Michigan City (69) and Valparaiso (37.5).

“It was not a typical day for us, but considering the competition and our line-up, it was expected,” Chesterton coach Chris Joll said. “We probably only lost two matches we should have won and I’m attributing that to our conditioning plan. We have trained through the last three weeks and are pretty tired as a team.

“That is by design.”

Chesteron’s first title of the day came at 182 pounds as Cade Girgenti rolled through the competition and finished the day with a pin of Merrillville’s Tyjonn Lockett (2:52) in the finals.

“Coach (Mark) Myers has donw a great job bringing Cade to where he is now,” Joll said. “Cade has been wrestling with a lot of confidence which results in him opening up his defense.”

Trojan Lucas Davison remained undefeated as he had little trouble getting through the competition at 195 pounds. Davison beat Portage’s Jacob Bondon 19-6 in the finals.

“Lucas continues to win matches in a dominant fashion,” Joll said. “His wins are expected, but he is still fun to watch.”

Chesterton also had three runner-up finishes including Diego Lemley (160), Brock Ellis (145) and Ethan Kaiser (120).

“Having two freshmen in the Finals was awesome,” Joll said. “It is a testament to our club program, the hours they’ve put into the sport and the support of the parents.”

Danny Tolin was third at 113 pounds with Ryne Beckman (152) and Evan Bates (170) finishing fourth in their weight classes.

The Trojans return to the mat on Wednesday when they travel to LaPorte to take on the Slicers beginning at 6:30 p.m.
