Finally healthy, the Chesterton wrestling team left their mark at the Duneland Atheltic Conference Meet Saturday at CHS.

The Trojans brought home four individual titles and finished second overall as a team.

Portage won the team title (248 points), followed by Chesterton (214.5), Merrillville (201.5), Crown Point (174.5), Lake Central (113), Valparaiso (101), LaPorte (87) and Michigan City (35).

“The DAC is a really tough conference,” Chesterton coach Chris Joll said. “I think having every kid score and having a really good first and second round was important for us to get us where we ended up. I think second was a good goal for us, but I feel like we even should have scored a few more points than we did.”

The Trojans first title of the day came at 160 pounds as Diego Lemley beat top-seeded Oszkar Kasch of Crown Point 7-6.

Lemley beat Merrillville’s Brandon Lucero in overtime in his opener and beat Valpo’s Mike Lichtenberger (3-0) in the semis.

“Diego hasn’t been great the last couple of weeks,” Joll said. “He’s one of the kids that never says anything in the room. He’ll be hurt and not tell you and that’s why he has trouble. Diego just fights through everything and that’s a credit to how tough a kid he is.”

Undefeated brothers Lucas and Andrew Davison continued to wrestle in dominating fashion with titles at 182 and 195 pounds.

Lucas wrestled a total of 6:19 on the day, including a fall victory in 1:49 over Crown Point’s Ethan Potosky in the finals. The junior also pinned Valpo’s Joey McIntyre and Lake Central’s Joey Szydlo on the day.

Andrew wrestled just 4:11 in picking up his title. A fall victory over Lake Central’s Walker Brummett in the finals took 3:32 and his semifinal win against Anthony Maceo of Portage took just :39.

“It looked like Lucas and Andrew were wrestling somebody’s little brothers today,” Joll said. “They just went out and dominated every match.”

Chesterton’s final individual title came at 220 pounds as sophomore Eli Pokorney beat a previously undefeated Crown Point senior by fall.

“Eli reversed a kid to his back and in the second round, we got away and took him down,” Joll said. “Eli just said let’s go and see what happens in the third period and pinned him. It’s clear to me he’s really strong. It’s clear to me he knows what he’s doing out there.

“It’s clear to me he isn’t timid and he’ll go all out all the time.”

Pokorney beat LC’s Eddie Alonso by fall in the opening round and did the same thing to Merrillville’s Andrew VanderWoude in the semifinals.

“We talked before the meet that today wasn’t about them individually, but about the team,” Joll said. “After a little bit of a disappointment at 132, it was nice that it didn’t affect the rest of the guys. Usually for us, that’s contagious when things don’t go our way.

“My expectations are that I expect a lot from our guys.”

The Trojans will finish the regular season on Thursday when they host LaPorte at 6:30 p.m. before starting the IHSAA State Tournament series the following week.

“I think we can get better,” Joll said. “I’m not going to let our young, lighter kids continue to use that as an excuse. And our good, heavier kids need to make the final jump to the level they can wrestle at. We are going to work our butts off so that when we get to Sectionals, those guys who need to can get out.

“We’ll figure out who needs what and work from there.”
