Trojan Wrestlers fall in DAC opener

The Chesterton wrestling team dropped its Duneland Athletic Conference opener 48-25 to Portage on Thursday night.

Cade Johnson and Nick Winland got things started for the Trojans with fall victories at 138 and 145. Johnson beat Alex Cornejo in 3:40, while Winland beat Tyler Herring in 3:13.

After a Portage victory at 152, Gavin Layman picked up a major decision over Tylee Swopes 12-2 for a 16-4 CHS lead.

The Indians won at 182 before Evan Bates beat Josh Warmick by fall at 192 in 1:28.

Portage picked up three straight fall victories and a tech fall before Danny Tolin beat Ty Haskins 12-8 at 120 pounds.

Back-to-back falls by the Indians ended the night.

The Trojans return to the mat next Wednesday when they travel to Crown Point to face the Bulldogs beginning at 6:30 p.m.
