The Chesterton wrestling team brought home a handful of gold.

The Trojans finished second overall as a team and had five individual champions when they left the IHSAA Crown Point Regional on Saturday.

The host Bulldogs scored 181.5 points to edge the Trojans (171), while Lowell was third (94).

“Crown Point wrestled really well,” Chesterton coach Chris Joll said. “Their depth was really the difference. We know we’ve got 7-8 guys, but haven’t been able to put all the weights together.”

The cavalcade of gold for the Trojans started at 132 pounds when Jack Tolin tech falled Michigan City’s David Taylor in the finals.

“Jack wrestled well,” Joll said. “It’s hard to tell sometimes how well he’s wrestling overall because we took them down, turned them and pinned them.”

A four-champ streak began at 160 pounds when Diego Lemley beat Crown Point’s Oszkar Kasch 7-2.

“Diego had a great day and beat two really quality kids,” Joll said. “In the finals, it was 0-0, built his lead and then when the kid came after us it got easier for us.”

Cade Girgenti (170 pounds) started a string of three straight fall victories as he pinned LaPorte’s Noah Perez at the 5:37 mark.

“Cade’s been paying his dues since freshman year,” Joll said. “Not surprised at how well Cade is wrestling. He does everything right in the room and is bringing it to the mat. He’s really wrestling confidently.”

Lucas Davison remained undefeated on the year with a fall victory over Kankakee Valley’s Logan Nowak at 182 pounds in just 1:22.

“Lucas had fun,” Joll said. “He wrestled on his feet a lot and we tried some different things, but when it was time to pin his guy, he did.”

Andrew Davison completed the gold rush with a pin victory over Crown Point’s Kyle Ramus at 1:19 of the first period.

“Andrew did what he needed to do,” Joll said. “The less time on the mat for him the better off he was.”

The Trojans also picked up a pair of runner-up finishes as Danny Tolin (106) and Eli Pokorney (220) each were second.

“Danny wrestled really, really well. I think we had a little more gas in the tank than most of the other kids,” Joll said. “Eli has trouble anticipating people adjusting to him. It was a really good learning experience and it’s something we’ll work on this week in practice.”

Chesterton will take a contingency of nine to next Saturday’s IHSAA Semistate at East Chicago Central with State berth’s on the line.

“You don’t get to State unless you deserve it,” Joll said. “Everybody’s got a chance if they wrestle well and earn it. We’ve got a chance to get five or more guys down there.”
