The Chesterton girls tennis team opened IHSAA Sectional play on Tuesday with a 5-0 victory over Wheeler at Portage High School.

The Trojans will face Valparaiso in Wednesday’s semifinal at 4:15 p.m. The other semifinal will match Portage against Boone Grove.

“Given the extremely windy conditions and dealing with our first warm day, I was very pleased with how we jumped out early in every match and didn’t look back,” Chesterton coach Tom Bour said. “The girls deserve so much credit. They didn’t take Wheeler for granted and remained focused from the moment we ended our team stretches to when the last match was over.”

In singles, Hannah Nabhan won for the seventh time in her last eight matches, beating Haley Collins 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1.

At No. 2, Ashley Fazekas beat Emma Heinold 7-5, 6-4 and Paige Donovan completed the singles sweep with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Laurel Stevenson 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles, Kara Maggio and Megan Hill beat Gabriella Ramirez and Kylee Rosko 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 before Taylor Nemtuda and Eliza Tumbas beat Paige Podlesak and Tessa Haldeman at No. 2.

“It’s always a good time of year for your team to be playing their best tennis,” Bour said.
