It may have taken nearly 3 1 hours, but that’s ok.
After a week of rainouts, the 19th-ranked Chesterton girls tennis team got a
match-deciding three-game victory from J.J. Lee at No. 3 singles to beat No.
16 Valparaiso 3-2 in the Duneland Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Lee dropped the opening set to Valpo’s Rachel Willing 6-4 and survived three
match points in the second set to win in a tiebreak before cruising to a 6-1
win in the third set.
“JJ’s fitness level and mental game were the difference in a close match,”
Chesterton coach Gretchen Shinn said.
The Trojans other two team points came in easy singles victories for Meg
Modesto over Caitlin Kennedy at No. 1 (6-2, 6-1) and Margaret Shinn against
Kelley Kennedy at No. 2 (6-2, 6-0).
In doubles, Valpo got victories from Brooke Sever and Kate Spencer 6-3, 6-2
against Rachel McCrum and Ellen Kerr at No. 1. At No. 2, Ava Meyer and
