The Chesterton girls tennis team had little trouble in picking up a 5-0 victory over Boone Grove in the IHSAA Sectional semifinals at Portage on Wednesday.

“We understood that we were heavy favorites heading into this match,” Chesterton coach Tom Bour said. “But to win like we did, and to do it without our No.1 player, was impressive.”

The Trojans played without sophomore Peyton Martinson at No. 1 singles due to illness. Martinson is expected back for Saturday morning’s championship match.

“Lilly Putchaven stepped in and did a great job for us," Bour said.

Putchaven cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Boone Grove’s Hailey Riley. Milena Veltri at No. 2 singles and Leah Rochford at No. 3 both won 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, Olivia Vesling and Hailee Ellenwood beat Abby Filbert and Isabella Warren 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1, while Libby Gibson and Christian Charlson beat Angelica Dotts and Savanna Eckhardt 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2.

CHS will face the winner of Thursday night’s match between Wheeler and Valparaiso on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. for the Sectional title.
