An even dozen.

The Chesterton boys swim team brought home its 12th consecutive Sectional title with a 100-point victory over second place Valparaiso on Saturday at LaPorte.

“Obviously the point of today is to try and win the Sectional,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “Thursday night our depth kids came through so much that we were in a great position. Today we got to kind of focus on our top end kids for next weekend.

“Overall, I’m really happy.”

The Trojans started the day with the quartet of Kyle Whitaker, Matt Rosiecki, Tyler Fozkos and Taylor Zakhar winning the 200 Medley Relay in 1:36.24. Zakhar immediately followed that up with a win in the 200 Free (1:47.37).

“Taylor Zakhar’s 200 Free dropped another couple of seconds,” Kinel said. “That was what we expected of him. That’s what seniors are supposed to do.”

Whitaker won his first event and broke his own Sectional Record with a victory in the 200 IM in 1:49.13. Not to be outdone, he broke another Sectional Record in the 500 Free (4:33.50) later.

The Trojan senior will be the top seed in both events at the State Finals.

“I swam great today and got a couple of records,” Whitaker said. “That and our 12th straight Sectional title as a team were the goals today.”

Whitaker has won six individual titles in three years and his goal isn’t just to be the first to get to the wall.

“I’m looking to break some records next weekend,” Whitaker said. “The 500 record is the oldest one on the books. I want the State one and to close down on the National one.

“I’m not just looking to win, but to break records.”

The other Trojan double individual winner was junior Tyler Fozkos. Fozkos won the 50 Free in 21.44 and the 100 Free in 47.90.

“Kyle and Tyler did what they needed to do and the guys on the Relays did what they were supposed to,” Kinel said. “We did about all we could. They are big meet guys and their big meet is next weekend.”

Chesterton also got big individual swims from its depth to pull out the title.

“The guys in the 500 with Chris McGue and Spencer Wright dropped huge times on Thursday and then cut another couple seconds today,” Kinel said. “Collin Ringas in the breaststroke. In the 50 Free, Brian Mabry was lights out Thursday night and did it again today. He stepped up in a big way.”

The Trojans also took top honors in the 200 and 400 Free Relays. In the 200, Rosiecki, Zakhar, Joe Gerard and Fozkos won in 1:28.53, while Zakhar, Nate Schuster, Gerard and Rosiecki won the 400 in 3:21.12.

“We still have kids that are unshaved and we have to put Kyle in a Relay too,” Kinel said. “We still have some things that we can do to get ready for State. We always do our best at the State Meet. I expect us to do it again.”
