Trojan Softball wins twice at Pendleton Heights

Mother nature finally allowed the Chesterton softball team to get back on the field and the Trojans picked up a pair of wins Saturday at the Pendleton Heights Horseshoe Classic.

CHS recorded victories over Madison Grant (13-2) and Jennings County (12-2), but fell to Lake Central (3-0).

“I was pleased with the day,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “We always use this day as a chance to move people around a little and try to see what we have. We saw a lot of very good things.”

In the opener, the Trojans jumped on top of Madison Grant early and cruised to a win behind a five strikeout performance from Lauren Anderson.

After scoring a solo run in the first, the Trojans erupted for six in the second inning.

Hayley McBride and Anderson each reached on an error to start the frame. After a sacrifice from Kari LaFreniere, McBride scored on a wild pitch. Courtesy runner Maddy Hamady scored on a squeeze bunt from Maddie Snemis.

A two-out walk to Faith Matta was followed with a stolen base. Shelby Grimm singled and Matta scored when Biz Zehner reached on an error. Krisey Stevenson also reached on an error and scored on Lexi Benko’s RBI single.

“Madison Grant had some defensive issues, but we hit the ball hard,” Hopson said. “Lauren did a nice job and a great job of getting out of a few jams.”

The game’s big blow came in the sixth as Chesterton finished the 10-run rule victory with a two-run home run from Hailey Johansen.

In the day’s second game, the Trojans managed just two hits in the loss to LC.

Hamady and Noelle Michael had the hits as Kelly Carr took the loss. Hayley Edmonds worked one inning and struck out two.

“I thought Kelly and Hayley held their own very well,” Hopson said. “We just didn’t give them any run support.”

In the finale, Chesterton scored four in the first and had little trouble in beating Jennings County

Zehner and Stevenson drew walks to start the first and scored on Benko’s double. Courtesy runner Hamady scored on McBride’s two-run home run.

The Trojans ended the game in the fifth with six runs as Stevenson doubles and Benko walked. McBride walked ahead of a two-run single by LaFreniere. McBride then scored on Johansen’s single.

LaFreniere and Johanson scored on a game-ending three-run home run from Cassidy Grimm.

Benko worked all five innings in getting the victory and struck out six.

“Lexi did a nice job in giving up just one hit,” Hopson said. “We really hit the cover off the ball.”
