Trojan Softball ties Hanover as night closes in

Back To Front Page

It got dark early on Friday night.

Darkness rolled in Friday night at Hanover Central and stopped the Chesterton softball teams shot at a 4-0 week as they played the Wildcats to a 9-9 tie.

The Trojans opened the scoring in the first as Cassidy Grimm was hit by a pitch and Lexi Benko reached on an error. Lauren Kobialka's misplayed fly ball resulted in Grimm and courtesy runner Mae Mallon scoring for a 2-0 lead.

After Hanover scored a pair of runs on its own in the bottom of the first, Chesterton retook the lead with a solo run in the third. Grimm reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on Benko's single to center. Kobialka's single to center plated Grimm.

Hanover added two runs in the third and fourth innings for a 6-3 lead before the Trojan bats got going in the fifth.

Benko started the rally with a single and pinch runner Jenna Vagner moved to second on Micaela Iacovetti's single. Kobialka doubled home both runners.

Kaitlyn Carr's misplayed ground ball moved courtesy runner Mae Mallon to third ahead of a walk to Marney Sisson to load the bases. Faith Matta cleared the basepath's with a three-run triple that put the Trojans on top 8-6.

The lead stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh when Hanover plated two runs to force extra innings.

Iacovetti started the frame with a single to left and Kobialka singled to center. Carr's ground ball was misplayed at second and Iacovetti scored for a 9-8 lead.

Hanover tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with a run as the game was called due to darkness.

Offensively, Snemis and Kobialka both had four hits to lead the Trojans' 17-hit attack. Benko, Iacovetti and Matta all had three hits each.

Benko worked the first three innings in the pitcher's circle and struck out six before giving way to Kobialka who pitched the final five innings and struck out five.

Chesterton returns to the field on Tuesday when they host Crown Point beginning at 4:30 p.m.
