The Trojans battled
eight innings to beat No. 9 Kankakee Valley 4-3 on Monday night.
“Our outfield was
bust, but they did an outstanding job tonight,” Chesterton coach LouAnn
Hopson said. “KV is a very good hitting team and their pitcher, Emma Maple,
has pitched in the State Finals the past two years. A few of the girls
struggled, but several of them kept things going offensively for us.”
KV opened the
scoring in the second with a home run, but Kari LaFreniere answered with a
home run of her own in the top of the third to tie the game at 1-1.
Another KV run in
the third gave them a 2-1 lead until the Trojans rallied in the sixth.
Kristy Stevenson walked and scored on Cassidy Grimm’s RBI double. Grimm
scored on a pinch-hit single from Hayley Edmonds for a 3-2 lead.
The Kougars hit
their second home run of the night to tie the game a 3-3 and eventually
force extra innings.
In the top of the
eighth, Stevenson drew a walk and eventually scored on LaFreniere’s two-out
single. LaFreniere had four hits to lead the Trojan offense.
KV threatened in
the eighth with a runner on second and two outs, Hopson elected to
intentionally walk a batter to face a two-time strike out victim of
Chesterton starter Lauren Anderson. Anderson induced a fly ball to left to
end the game.
“Other than the two
long balls, Lauren did a great job tonight,” Hopson said.
The Trojans are now
19-4 overall and finish Duneland Athletic Conference play tonight when they
host LaPorte. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
