Chesterton coach Dan Lynch said Marney Sisson has hit a ball off the top of the fence a number of times during the season, with none going over.

In Wednesday’s sectional semifinal against Portage, the senior first baseman couldn’t have timed her first home run of the year much better.

Sisson launched a second-inning grand slam that got the offense rolling in what was a 14-2 win in five innings over Portage in the semis of the Class 4A Chesterton Sectional.

“Marney did an awesome job today, crushed the ball,” Lynch said. “It was a great time for her to hit one over.”

Sisson went on to add a pair of run-scoring singles in the third and fourth innings, finishing 3-for-3 with six RBIs. Not bad for someone out of the No. 8 spot in the lineup.

“I wasn’t sure if (the grand slam) was gone so I just put my head down, ran and it went over,” Sisson said. “I got a pitch inside I was able to turn on. It felt good off the bat, but I didn’t know it was automatically gone.

“It felt good to get one out finally and it was nice, but I couldn’t have done that without the hits in front of me that inning. The bottom of the order hitting like we did (Wednesday) can be big going forward.”

The aforementioned bottom of the Trojans lineup accounted for half of the Trojans hits, going a combined 8-for-9 as Lauren Kobialka was 3-for-3 with a two-run double and Faith Matta was 2-for-3.

Micaela Iacovetti, Gillian Price and Kaitlyn Carr all had two hits, with Carr and Iacovetti each driving in a run.

“It’s great, they’re seeing the ball well and they’re hitting it, they are doing what we want them to do,” Lynch said. “They’re acting as a team, all through the lineup. The top of the lineup struggled a little (Wednesday), but the bottom of the lineup picked them up.”

Lexi Benko also tossed 2 1/3 innings of shutout ball in relief of Carr.

Chesterton will play Hobart, a 14-1 winner over Michigan City, tonight at 6 p.m. for the Sectional Championship.

“You can look at records but at this point each game is always a challenge,” Lynch said. “We tell the girls they can’t ever look past a game and to always just play our game. Teams can get rallies going, we can make mistakes, and the game can change.”
